Why is Pakistan refusing help?

The name Pakistan evokes different emotion in different people in India.  Many hate the name and several people are indifferent to it.  Some moderate people understand or try to understand the country and there are quite a few sympathizers as well.

What we do not know much sitting here in India is that Pakistan has suffered one of the worst humanitarian crisis in last few weeks. The flood waters of the mighty Indus has ravaged Pakistan. There are estimates that more than 4 million people have been left homeless by the devastating floods. Three weeks of unusually heavy monsoon rains triggered flash floods in Khyber-Paktunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh provinces of Pakistan, affecting 20 million people. Thousands have died but millions have lost their home, their land, their crops and everything they ever had in their life. The calamity is bigger than any earthquake or the tsunami, it might have killed far less people in numbers but in the long run it will have a far fetched effect on more people than any other calamity the region has seen in past years.

This calamity might have lesser death count but it is the biggest tragedy world has seen in terms of no. of people that would be affected by it. Bigger than Haiti Earthquake few months back and bigger than Tsunami of 2004.

Surprisingly, not many nations are coming forward to help Pakistan. Some have contributed meager sum of money and offered food and medicine but the people of Pakistan needs more. Countries like Saudi Arabia, China, Japan and United States have offered monetary and other help. World bank has promised millions to rebuild the houses, roads, bridges, granaries and to repair the dams. Asian Development Bank has promised even more than the World bank. However Its still not enough.  Any kind of help in this hour of need is welcome. All the help and aid would trickle down slowly and whether it would reach the actual victims of the flood who have lost their life’s savings is another question. Government of Pakistan of course is not doing enough and people do not have much faith in the government to provide them short term emergency help or even any long term solution to their massive problems.

However, for Pakistani Politicians the bigger issue is whether to accept help from India or not. India has offered 5Million $ as aid money, which might not be much but as a gesture says lot. Especially in todays times when there is general mistrust amongst the 2 countries, politicians are not talking and there are larger issues like Kashmir and Terrorism show no sign of abetting. Pakistani politicians are worried that taking aid from India would amount to severe backlash at their home front, what they have not realized that a hungry man does not ask from where the food has come. Right now people of Pakistan who have suffered in the floods, lost their houses, lands, cattle and any source of livelihood and are living in temporary makeshift camps and tents with no sign of any improvement and only rotten food to eat are least bothered if the food grain parcels have Indian stamp on them. Playing politics at this hour is the worst form of crime one can do.

There are organizations like LeT and JuD which are militant outfits are collecting money for the people and providing them help in whatever way they can. If it is acceptable to take help from such rogue parties then why not legitimate aid and supply from India? By allowing such rogue organizations to collect money for people  they are in fact creating sympathy in the minds of people for such organizations, which in long term can be more harmful than one can ever think. Empty stomachs have no loyalties. Militant outfits are waiting for such crisis to first help and then convert, out of work no hoper’s in their vicious plots. Would Pakistani government like this?

Pakistan had sent aid at the time of Gujarat Earthquake and there was an Indo-Pak joint team during earthquake in Kashmir. India has accepted help without any hue and cry and with zero politics, why cant Pakistan do that? Just take the money and use it wisely for the people who are desperate for any kind of help.

Can Pakistan ever change ?

Pakistan is a strange country. On one side it has been ravaged by terrorism from within and from Taliban sponsored terror from Afghanistan and on other side it continues to favor terror, although indirectly by not acting against groups such as LeT which targets India.

Here’ a report by Pew Global Attitudes Project about how extremism is on the rise in Pakistan society. All of us in India get to hear things like how ‘civil’ society in Pakistan is moderate but the survey shows something different. Not only an average Pakistani support organizations like LeT but they disapprove of anyone who tries to improve relationships with India. An average Pakistani respect their army and Army Chief Kayani, who has no interest in improving relations with India and see India as a major threat. But the same Pakistani disapprove of President Zardari, who has tried in past to improve relationships with the big neighbor.

The survey also shows that an average Pakistani is turning more and more hostile towards America in spite of receiving millions of dollars of aid and arms from USA.  Most Pakistanis think that terrorism is a big problem however what they mean is the terrorism which affects them is a problem, as they continue to soft support terrorists affecting neighbors.

The report clearly shows that Pakistan society is accepting more and more extremism as the way forward,  something which Indian right-wingers have been saying for years. There is absolutely no change happening in Pakistan’s attitude towards west and India, on the contrary it is going the other way. Would moderates and Pakistan sympathizers in India and the West ever listen?

Pakistan aids Afghan Insurgency

Pakistan plays the game of chess in Afghanistan in such a way that it can never lose, as it plays from both sides. At one hand its army assists US Army in combating terrorists, dirty talibans and whoever is fighting and on the other its primary intelligence agency ISI aids and helps to plot the Afghans to fight against the same US Army. Wow !! This is one game they can never lose as the reports on This Wikileaks site and a report in New York Times points out.

The Americans, who are chiefly responsible for the mess they have created by first creating the Taliban in the 1980s and then powering ISI and Pakistan Army by millions of $s of aid money, themselves are playing safe as they are bound to withdraw from Afghanistan beginning July 2011. Only 1 can win this dirty game and certainly Pakistan with its 2 faced approach, cannot lose. But didn’t we all know this?

Continuing with the Wikileaks documents, after their revelations the US Govt. is shocked and so are lot many people around the world, however not so us Indians, as we had been saying this since years. Apparently, USA Taxpayer’s money is used to aid Pakistan by giving them military aid and weapons, which in turn are used by a wing of that rogue army to kill US Army fighting in Af-Pak region. Its one big massive scam.

Afghan-Pak getting close, should India be worried?

Here’s a link from Washington Post that describes how Afghan government led by its President Hamid Karzai is getting closer with Pakistani establishments at the cost of India.

India who have invested Billions in rebuilding Afghanistan have lot to lose and lot more to worry if Pakistan supported Taliban hobnobs with Karzai government. Importantly USA is supporting the move of Pak and Afghan getting closer inspite of being aware of India’s contribution in Afghanistan.
